Smart mask early prototype

Design goals
A fully working prototype for a presentation. It has CO2, O2, PPG, humidity, barometric pressure, and accelerometer sensors. It’s a testing mask for sportsmen: to make sure they are fit, they put on a mask and do simple balancing and recovery tests in 15 minutes. The data from this mask is then transferred to a platform, where it’s processed by smart algorithms. The trainer then receives recommendations and predictions about these sportsmen’s progress. I only had a month for this project from start to finish.
My process:
- Making a moodboard;
- Choosing a right nose cup to use as a base;
- Finding an optimal place for the electronic components and sensors. The sensors for gas analysis and the batteries are quite big and heavy and it was a challenge to place them optimally;
- Sculpting the shape of the mask with modeling clay;
- 3d scanning it and making a CAD model in Fusion 360;
- Finding an optimal way to secure the electric components;
- Working on belts and PPG sensor placement. The belts had to be ergonomic but secure to hold the mask in place during tests. I choose the materials and made an optimal pattern for a laser cut.
- Transfering a model to designers for rendering and graphical design;
- Prototyping: laser cutting the belts, 3d printing all the components, and placing all the electronics inside.
